Depressed, anxious, problems in a relationship. These are some of the issues that bring people into therapy. Taking the first step toward getting help is often the most difficult.
As I see it, therapy needs to provide a non-judgmental, accepting and supportive space to work on the problems one faces. I strive to treat each person as a unique individual, helping them to direct the treatment that will move them beyond the problems that they are now facing to a life that is hopefully more fulfilling and less painful. It is my aim to help each individual to deal with the issues that are affecting them and causing them the emotional pain that has lead them to seek psychotherapy. I seek to truly listen to each person, to deal with them with respect and work with them as the unique individual that they are. No two people are the same and I do not provide a cookie cutter approach to the work that I do. Each person has his or her own needs, pains, strengths and issues that need addressing.
I have worked as an adult, adolescent and child psychotherapist for 30 years. I specialize in working with adults with depression, anxiety and difficulties in relationships and with children and adolescents with depression, and behavioral difficulties. I have as well worked with parent/child relationships, abuse, and neglect, and issues around sexuality. I currently and in the past have taught courses in working with acting out adolescents, ADHD, depression, primary relationships, and anger. Too often the focus is on the symptom and the underlying problem is ignored. In that situation, problems will resurface in a short time, as the causes for the difficulties have not been dealt with. Psychotherapy needs to look at causes and not simply the overt symptom. Every individual is different and the therapist must respond to each individual and what their needs are.
Patients have described me as 'caring, nurturing, gentle, and direct' as a therapist. Through psychotherapy, we can help make sense of what is feeling wrong, relieve your anxiety and depression, heal wounds, sadness and anger from relationships, grieve losses, and help you improve your self-esteem and regain your ability for closeness and intimacy.
I am psychodynamically oriented and a psychoanalyst, trained at the British Psychoanalytic Institute and the Anna Freud Center. The form of treatment must be based on the particular problems and concerns that each individual brings to therapy. Some individuals only need or want short-term work. Others may need a longer and more intensive form of treatment. The patient needs to see if they feel comfortable with the therapist, as the relationship between patient and therapist is the key to the treatment. Each individual must be seen for who they are and what difficulties they are experiencing. They must be understood both as an individual and in regards to the particular culture they come from, which helps make them who they are. I have experience treating people from various ethnic, national and religious groups. Therapy must deal with the social and cultural issues that impact on the problems of each individual. I am a Board Certified Diiplomate in Clinical Social Work, a member of the New York Freudian Society, The Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of New Jersey, Section1, Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association, and a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytic Association.
Child Psychotherapy
Children who have experienced considerable change in their lives or who have survived traumatic events need to express and understand their feelings. Children who have behavioral problems are usually expressing by their behavior the fact that they are experiencing emotional problems they are not able to deal with. These problems may be depression, high anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, fear, feelings of rejection etc. Through the therapeutic use of play and talk, children are given the opportunity to discover and express their feelings in a safe and benign environment. When a child is helped to feel that what they feel can be looked at and they will not be criticized, judged or punished, they can gradually change their feelings and behaviors. Therapy allows children to internalize the message that they are good and not bad and that they are loved. It enables them to change their negative views of themselves and their families with a more positive healthy feeling. The pain, anxiety, depression , fear will gradually change to where a child will feel more positively towards themselves and better able to deal with the problems both within themselves and within their families.
What children need Child Therapy?
• Children who are dealing with parental conflict, separation or divorce.
• Children who have been traumatized (sexual, physical or emotional abuse).
• Children who have been adopted or are in foster care.
• Children who are dealing with issues of loss, such as illness or death of a loved one.
• Children who have been hospitalized or experienced major illness, accidents or disasters.

• Children who experience high anxiety over issues where this anxiety is not realistic.
• Children who are extremely oppositional, unwilling or unable to behave in appropriate ways given their age and developmental stage.
• Children who do not seem to be able to make or keep friends, are lonely and or isolated.
• Children who are not able to perform academically at their potential.
• Children who have witnessed domestic violence.
• Children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
• Children who have experienced serious accidents or disasters.
Signs to be aware of:
• Excessive anger, worry, sadness or fear.
• Aggressive behavior (hurting others or self).
• Inappropriate separation anxiety.
• Excessive shyness.
• Behavioral regression.
• Low self-esteem.
• Learning or other school problems.

I work with individuals over 16 and couples offering confidential counselling support in a discreet and comfortable village setting, close to Altrincham town centre and all transport links.
Most of us feel mixed up, sad, depressed or anxious at one time or another. With counselling you can explore all emotional issues enabling you to manage your life more effectively.
My job is not to give you advice - but to help you to untangle all the confusing thoughts and feelings that are experiencing and that are getting in the way of YOU solving your own problem.
With more insight into your problems you can discover how your previous decisions and choices may have limited you. And by learning to manage your feelings and behaviour more effectively you can replace old limiting patterns with more life-enhancing ones.
For example, I will work with you to explore the roots of your anxiety, OCD,
panic attacks, depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders and other addictions, shame-based issues, self-harming or suicidal fantasies, feelings of 'emptiness', anger problems/containment, relationship and sexual problems and stress or work-related issues.
If you are coming with your partner, I can help you learn to understand one another and find healthier ways of relating so that both of you can get your needs met in your relationship.
Whatever reasons for your coming to see me, I look forward to working with you.
Karen Blumenfeld, BA hons, Certified Transactional Analyst, UKCP reg. psychotherapist.

I am a trained Therapeutic Counsellor. I have 6 years post experience of working with clients in various settings. Having worked with people of different age groups and dealing with a range of issues, including: Addiction, depression, Anxiety, Stress related including work and or relationship,Personal Development, Self Esteem, Communication Difficulties, Displacement and Patterns. Plus I am also a Business Counsellor, working with Business related issues.
My theoretical thinking is Eclectic, which include Person Centred, Psychodynamic and Intercultural Practice. I offer a safe confidential space for my clients to explore their issues with safety. I attend regular Supervision as part of my practice and follow the Ethical Framework laid down by the Britsh Association of Counselling and Psychtherapy of which I am an Individual Member.
Counselling helps you to look at problems you are facing now. It may focus on specific issues, crisis or confilict. In todays fast moving world it is easy to lose sight of your own needs.
Counselling is not judgemental or critical or a space to gain advice. Counselling is a place to speak and be heard by another about what is happening for you right now, and then, work from there.
Deciding to enter into Counselling, shows the committment you have to yourself to take the steps, to make the changes you would like to achieve in your life on a personal Level.
I see people on a weekly basis: 50 minutes for a counselling session.
Please contact me either by email or telephone, for an informal and confidential chat.

About me: I am an experienced & supervised practitioner offering confidential therapy. I have over ten years of experience in the NHS and continue to work in the NHS. I also have a significant experience working for the voluntary sector and currently offer my supervision skills to groups of qualified psychotherapists. In my private practice I work with both individuals and couples.
What to expect: My diverse skills allow me to be flexible in a way I work with each individual. For some people that means that dealing with symptoms would be most helpful (at least initially) whilst for others, it may mean that we would be exploring the relationships or that we would be looking into the patterns underlying your current difficulties. The length of therapy will be also discussed in the first session and could range from a brief (12 - 16 – 24 sessions) to an open- ended long-term therapy. The first meeting that can last up to an hour and half is used by both of us to see if we can work together and, if so, to jointly decide how. This is an opportunity for me to know more about your difficulties and, for you, to know more about me and the way I work, what to expect from therapy etc. Further sessions usually last 50 minutes and are held weekly.
Experience: I am experienced in working with many issues, which could be briefly described as: Interpersonal issues, Coping with Life Changes, Emotional Difficulties, Trauma/Abuse, Depression, Anxiety/Panic, Cultural Issues, Difficulty Managing Chronic Illness.
Qualifications: I hold the following qualifications: BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Prof Psychology, PGC Systemic Therapy. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP), the British Psychological Society (BPS), the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and the Association for Cognitive Analytical therapy (ACAT). I adhere to the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy by both BACP and the BPS.
